BIONAZ, AMPHITHEATER OF ENCHANTING PEAKS
Let yourself be enveloped by unspoiled nature scenarios
The locality offers scenarios of uncontaminated nature, gastronomic specialties to discover flavors that have almost disappeared, craftsmanship faithful to ancient traditions, agriculture and livestock handed down from generation to generation. In the municipality there are numerous small villages, scattered on the side most exposed to the sun.
Here you will see:
- The Parish Church of Santa Margherita : built in 1694, it is elegantly simple. The eye is drawn to the three recently restored Baroque altars in painted and partly gilded wood.
- The Place Moulin hydroelectric reservoir : Bionaz contains around twenty glaciers which feed various Alpine lakes and this dam, one of the largest in Europe, which collects 105 million cubic meters of water.
- In the villages of the country you can admire several chapels, the old community ovens for cooking black bread and the traditional wooden rascards.
Among the mountains of Bionaz, guests of the locality find the possibility of experiencing an adventure in peace, in a still uncontaminated environment where a vast nature reserve has also been established.
In the summer , the sports offer consists of excursions suitable for all levels of preparation towards lakes and refuges, climbing equipped walls and via ferratas , alpine ascents, mountain-bike routes and trout fishing in lakes and streams.
While in winter you can practice cross-country skiing on the Dzovennoz-Lexert track, which also has a shooting range for biathlon. There are also various proposals for snowshoeing and ski mountaineering, while the more adventurous can face the climb of an ice waterfall .
Families find peace and tranquility in Bionaz, but also fun for children. Younger guests can juggle the paths of the "Rebel Park" adventure park , unique for the panorama it offers, or take a trip to the Prarayer Refuge , along a flat path, which can also be traveled with a stroller, which runs alongside the emerald green waters of the dam of Place Moulin. For a different day than usual, you can also have lunch at the Lexert picnic area , surrounded by greenery, on the banks of a pretty lake. During the winter season, Bionaz offers a smallplayground in the snow for fun bobsled descents.
A trip to the Place Moulin dam, a work of European importance, is within everyone's reach because it is possible to get close to the reservoir by car.
The upper Bionaz valley saw its landscape change radically between 1961 and 1965 due to the construction of the enormous Place Moulin dam. The dam created Prarayer Lake, an enclosed reservoir in the mountains. In the background you can see the Petites and les Grandes Murailles with their impressive glaciers.
It is the largest body of water in the region and one of the largest barriers in Europe.
The plant can be visited freely from the outside, but by booking it is possible to take advantage of a guided tour inside from May to September. The barrage can be inspected on several levels, which also descend below the waters of the lake and are connected to each other by stairs and an elevator. Inside there are numerous machinery and equipment, linked both to the functioning of the dam and to the control of safety conditions.
The lake of Place Moulin is flanked by a dirt farm road closed to traffic: this route constitutes a flat and comfortable walk (1 hour's walk) which leads to the historic pasture of Prarayer and the refuge of the same name.
